Julie McEwan - Dalby TaraJulie McEwan - Dalby TaraThe North Arm Rifle Club celebrated its centenary in style at the weekend with about 85 top shooters from around Queensland and NSW doing battle with the elements.

Winds swirled and blew up to near gale force at times as the range lived up to its challenging reputation.

Almost half the field comprised scope rifle shooters competing on electronic targets.

The special medallions struck for the occasion were shared around as even the best shooters struggled for consistency across the two days of competition – the North Arm Prize Meeting on Saturday and the Lilley District Association on Sunday.

Julie McEwan from Dalby-Tara scored the only A Grade double, winning the North Arm F Open on Saturday and the two-day Grand Aggregate. She was pipped by a single centre bull in the Lilley event on Sunday by Brisbane shooter Lindsay Crombie.

Biloela competitor Charles Arrowsmith won the Target Rifle A Grade Grand Aggregate with 291.19 from a possible 300 across the six ranges.

Muckadilla’s Fred Hewitt, who gets plenty of wind practice on his club’s fearsome open range, missed just two bulls for a splendid 148.12 to win the Lilley competition on Sunday. Rod Prayle from Maryborough took out the North Arm championship, dropping just three shots.

The strong F Standard scope class Grand Aggregate winner was Norm Cross from Gemfields who finished just two centres behind Dick Blocksidge from Albert District who only competed in the in Lilley shoot on Sunday.

Ipswich shooter Josh Reid won the North Arm shoot on Saturday, but could not handle the conditions on day two.

The North Arm celebrations will conclude with a special event on November 9 which marks 100 years to the day that the range opened.

Dot Davison, daughter-in-law of club founder George Davison will fire the last shot of the century.

Dot who is 97, marked targets at North Arm for 50 years, leaving the shooting to her husband Jim who died in 1980 when the range was renamed in honour of father and son.

Her daughter Carol Richardson, who was among the competitors at the weekend, said her mother was looking forward to finally having her first shot.
