The growing popularity of scope rifle shooting in the country was in evidence at the South Burnett District Prize Meeting at Wondai at the weekend, with traditional open sight rifles outnumbered more than two to one.

There were some impressive scores in the good conditions at 300 and 500 yards on Saturday and 600 and 700 yards on Sunday.

The F Open scope event which attracted a strong field of 15 shooters saw a close contest with Denis Aarons from North Arm Rifle Club on the Sunshine Coast emerging the victor by a single shot with a score of 233.14.

Phil Dewhurst from Wallumbilla and Col Sutton from Goondiwindi were locked together on 232, but Phil took second with a convincing to 15 to 9 centre bull count.

In F Standard A Grade, Brian Pickles from Natives in Brisbane was a clear winner from club mate Wayne Latham. Dalby’s Graham Sells had a convincing win in B Grade.

The target rifle A Grade competition saw two top shooters miss a single bull in the 40 shot aggregate. Wendy Latham from Natives edged out Biloela’s Charles Arrowsmith 199.21 to 199.19.

Kevin Howlett from Natives won B Grade.

The next events on the shooting calendar are a .303 rifle ANZAC memorial contest at North Arm next Sunday, April 13 and the Central Queensland Championships at Raglan over Easter.
