Queensland Under 25 Team Training

6-8 June 2009 at Goondiwindi

Queensland Rifle Shooting has a strong future!  The Queensland under 25 Rifle Team  travelled to Goondiwindi range for 2 days of training. Saturday they joined the local Club in their weekly shoot at 500 meters. Erica Young and Isaac Francis ended up with a double possible, beating the locals by 2 points and top scoring in their own team.

The Past &  Present Trophy was up for grabs. A strong team from the Goondiwindi Club , A Barbarian team made up of shooter from other Clubs and the Under 25 team  arrived at the Range on Sunday morning ready to Shoot. Overnight rain hade made movement from range to range difficult, four ranges and carrying all your gear was going to make to day long. This was going to be excellent training for the u25’s .

First range was 300 meters  the U25 team bolted out of the gates only losing 3 points. The Barbarians  and the Goondiwindi teams both went behind the 8 ball because of shots on the wrong target.   600 meters was the next range, the south westerly wind  had started to pick up. The trailing 2 teams had refocused and improved but not enough as the U25 had taken this range again and only dropped 3 points again

After lunch 700 meters was started. The wind was well up and cooling the temperature down. The Goondiwindi Team won that range, reclaiming 2 point back from the U25’s. The Barbarian’s were able to get one point back.   The final range 800 meters and the light was starting to fade making sighting difficult. The Barbarian team showed some form only dropping 4 points and taking out the range.  Ernie Mace  the Captain of the under 25 team accepted the Past & Present Trophy after his team had the winning score of 1179 with 117 V bulls from the Barbarians with 1173 and 111 V bulls and rounding up was Goondiwindi scoring 1144 and 77 V’s.

Queenslanders can be proud of their State Under 25 Team. They are very skilled competitors and will do us proud in the National Competition in Brisbane latter this year.

Photos from Russell Saxby.   The Goondiwindi Rifle Club enthusiastically hosted the Queensland Under 25 Team during their training in preparation for the National Teams Matches in November, organising a teams match complete with inaugural trophy to raise the stakes.   The level of competition was fierce with Australian Team members and State Team representatives, past and present, from Qld and NSW, lining up against our future champions.   Team Coach Ernie Mace and the boys reported they had a fantastic time and will look forward to heading out to Goondiwindi again next year.   The concrete mounds and southerly aspect is similar to the Macintosh Range in Canberra making Goondiwindi an ideal training range.   The Goondiwindi Argus newspaper printed a great photo of the boys and a large article in the sports section.   Congratulations to the Club for their efforts in supporting our State Team.
