Ipswich Rifle Club - Ripley Rifle Range

Ipswich & District Annual Prize Meeting 25th July 2010

Albert District Rifle Club member Shane Abood broke through for his first Open Prize Meeting win, beating a strong field at Ipswich on Sunday.

Mr Abood, who has been a regular competitor for more than 10 years, earned his victory the hard way, narrowly defeating State representative Ashley Bidgood from Crows Nest.  He had to post the day’s best score, a possible 50 with 8 centre bulls on the final 800 metres range to edge out Mr Bidgood. Both shooters dropped only a single shot over three ranges to post aggregates of 149 with 17 centre bulls and 149 with 16 respectively.

The Ipswich Open attracted a field of 79 competitors from Queensland and NSW with visitors from Tasmania and Western Australia.

Western visitor Mahlon Reid set the early pace with two possibles at 600 metres but faltered on the final range to finish ninth in A grade and second in Veterans behind Wayne Latham from Natives Club who also finished third in A Grade with 148.16.

Shooting conditions were variable from ideal to a fluky breeze and light rain making some results the luck of the draw.

There were a total of 18 possible scores, including C grade winner Colin Jones from Natives Rifle Club who shot a 50.4 on the final range. B Grade was won by Ron Bowman from Gatton, who was tied with Stephen Small from Beaudesert on 146.11, however Ron took first place under a mutual agreement by both shooters.

The F Standard scope class which attracted 23 competitors was won by Brisbane Central’s Ernie Mace while Brisbane Rifle Club member Chris Bell took out the F Open scope class.
