Country shooters finally get bragging rights

The power axis in Queensland rifle shooting has gone bush with a convincing win by the Country Open team against their City counterparts at Belmont Range in Brisbane on Sunday.

The Country team captained by Russell Saxby from Goondiwindi won the popular annual match at their third attempt competing over the testing 900 and 1000 yard ranges. The 15 member team posted an aggregate score of 2441 points for the 35 shot match to clearly outpoint City on 2432.

Country shooters completed a satisfying day out by also winning the Veterans and F Standard scope classes. The Veteran squad, dominated by Goondiwindi shooters, won by three points in another close tussle 786 to 783. The F Standard scope class team repeated their victory from last year, posting an aggregate 897 for a strong win over the City on 867.

The City Under 25 team beat Country 620 to 593 and while the F Open City team was too strong for Country, winning 928 to 896.

Helen Griffiths, Pacific Rifle Club, proved her liking for this annual event by posting the top score of the day for the third year in succession with an aggregate 172.13.  Ashley Bidgood from Crows Nest-Goombungee had the best individual Country score of 171.17.

The City vs Country match was shot at 900, 900 and 1000 yards due to recent rains.

Country shooters go down in the wet – again

Country shooters went down to city in the wet for the second year in a row at Belmont in Brisbane on Sunday.   Competition was shortened to 30 shots over 600 and 1000 yards as rain threatened on the range which had been deluged earlier in the week.

Seventy of the State’s best shooters took part in five teams events with the city team convincing winners of the open competition with an aggregate 2199 to 2178.   City veterans narrowly turned the tables on the country team which was victorious last year, scoring an aggregate 723 to 721.  In F Open competition, city won 1328 to 1324.   The country team won the F Standard competition with an aggregate 964 to city’s 952.   Country under 25 shooters also enjoyed a narrow win. Both teams finished on 429 with country scoring 32 inner bulls to city’s 26.

For the second year Helen Griffiths from Cleveland produced the top score of the competition with a possible 150 with 17 inner bulls. Native Rifle Club’s Catherine O’Loghlen was the only other shooter not to drop a shot.   Rising young star Isaac Francis from Toowoomba top scored in under 25 with 147.13.

The inaugural QRA City vs Country Teams Matches were shot today over 300, 600, 900 yards with 79 shooters, coaches and captains on the Duncan Range.   The sky was overcast and the wind gusty as the lead chopped back and forth between City teams and Country teams.   The Country team members were distinctive in their red Toyota caps, unveiled at the Country team bbq on Saturday night.   Chief Range Officer Glenn Ellis finished the 900 at the perfect time, just before the rain, which drenched Belmont in the afternoon.   Team members enjoyed the QRA sponsored barbecue lunch watching the storm before the final 1000 yard range was cancelled.

Results for 300, 600, 900 yds, 1000 yards was washed out
