MDRA - Eric Murray Shield 13 July 2008

On Sunday 13 July, three District Rifle Associations met to challenge each other at the long ranges for the Eric Murray Shield.  The day started off a bit cloudy with a readable wind at 800 yards and although the MDRA (red) started off with a cracking pace, the other three teams were within striking distance.   The 900 yard distance put a bit of space between the scores, although SEDRA set a high scoring centre count.  Though DDDRA was a few points down at 800 yards, they made a good comeback at 900 yards and a creditable centre count.  The MDRA (Green) team that started off well at 800 yards, lost ground at 900 yards and it could not be retrieved.

Over a relaxing barbecue lunch, capably cooked by Tony and Kon, the members geared themselves up for the final test.  The markers joined the shooters for lunch and enjoyed a relaxing time at the MDRA clubhouse.  By the time the 1000 yard mound was confronted, it was evident that the final tally could go either to MDRA (Red) or SEDRA, with the latter team scoring 4 points and a centre more than the Reds.  The gathering clouds held off to allow the match to be concluded without a problem.

John Schafferius, Range Officer, could give no clue to stats officer Ruth Duncan on the winning team until the last score was in because the V bull numbers were so close.  With two centres the only difference between MDRA (Red) and SEDRA, the tough competition was acknowledged over a friendly time at the MDRA clubhouse.

Helen Griffiths presented Bill Martin with the Eric Murray shield and medals presented to the Red team members.  Geoff Long from DDDRA was top shooter for the day, not dropping a point and punching 23 centres out of a possible 30.  Great coaching from Ash Bidgood!  Bill Martin, captain of the MDRA (Red) team was runner up with 150.19.  Good shooting!

Thanks go to all shooters who travelled some long distances to the Duncan Range, to the capable markers, Range Officer John, to Pacific Rifle Club for providing the early morning ‘tea and bikkies’ and to all the committee members and others who helped make the day a resounding success.

If I can find my camera, I’ll send in a picture!
